Treason-charged Namiwa breaks silence again to defend Speaker Suleman against ‘DPP intimidation’

Despite being subject to a court gagging order over his earlier “President in two months” claim, Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) leader Sylvester Namiwa has stepped forward to defend Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman, amid what he describes as attempts by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to intimidate him.

Speaking to journalists in Blantyre, CDEDI executive director Namiwa insisted Suleman had acted entirely within Parliament’s oversight mandate by establishing joint committees to scrutinise matters of national importance.

Namiwa argued that the Speaker’s position as head of the Legislature grants him a non-partisan mandate to serve all Malawians, insisting his election through the DPP does not give the party any right to control his decisions in office.

He went on to warn against alleged threats reportedly targeting Suleman and several committee chairpersons following the Speaker’s recent press briefing, urging that such intimidation must not be tolerated.

Namiwa also called on ordinary Malawians to actively support Parliament’s planned inquiries by coming forward with information that could help expose cartels and corruption within the system.

“We fully support what Hon Suleman has done. He wants to transform things and there will be no better time to change Malawi than now,” Namiwa said.
