Trickster jailed for swindling K135  000 for impersonating MRA employee

The Nkukula Magistrate Court in Lilongwe has sentenced a 38 year old man identified as Charles Mulingo to 12 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for allegedly duping a 24 yeald old young woman (Name Withheld) in pretext that he would help her secure a job.

The court heard that Mulingo presented himself to the victim as an employee of Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and that if given money, he could easily get the lady a job.

The incident happened in December according to facts presented in court.

The lady later realised that Mulingo was playing hide and seek and that he was not an MRA employee.

This is when he reported the matter to Police but after the woman had already paid the sum of K135,000.00 cash.

Mulingo was later arrested by Police and was charged with an offence of False Pretence under Section 319 of the Penal Code which he pleaded guilty.

While passing her judgement, Second Grade Magistrate Cecilia Onsewa described Mulingo’s conduct as deplorable.

She therefore advised job seekers to follow proper procedures to avoid falling into the same trap.

Onsewa warned that there are several tricksters out there hence the need to slap them with stiffer punishment as a warning to other wood be offenders.

Mulingo hails from Kunenekude Village in the Area of Traditional Authority Kandulu in Mwanza District.
