Two ambulances thought to have carried ‘blood suckers’ smashed in Phalombe

Barely fews days after the Malawi Police dismissed blood suckers claims in Mulanje district, communities in Phalombe district have smashed two ambulances on suspicion that they carried blood suckers.

Ambulance attacked

The damaged ambulances belong to Phalombe and Mulanje District Health Offices (DHOs).

The incident, coming barely few days after three people believed to be have been blood suckers were burnt to death in Mulanje, happened Wednesday night, but the passengers escaped unhurt.

According to Nyasa Times sources, the ambulance belonging to Mulanje was coming from Lilongwe and proceeded to neighbouring Phalombe to drop one of the members of staff at Phalombe District Health Office.

While the ambulance for Phalombe DHO was smashed on its way to Migowi to pick up a patient there. This was the district’s second ambulance to be attacked by communities.

Meanwhile, the Police described as untrue reports about the presence of blood suckers in the two districts.

National Registration Bureau officers carrying out national identification registration exercise were nearly attacked by the communities in Phalombe. They thought to be blood suckers.

National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera described the blood sucking reports as a hoax.

Kadadzera condemned people who are fabricating these malicious rumours which he said are affecting innocent individuals who are either wounded or have their houses demolished.

Much as I don’t agree with mob justice, I however feel that the police would’ve come out in the open and explain why such rumour are making rounds there. Dismissing them as merely a hoax will not help matters. We do not want to lose more lives. Remember sipafuka Usi popanda moto!

In the early 70s, there were blood suckers in Blantrye in Chimwankhunda, Chilobwe etc whereby they entered the houses through the roof at night when people were suffocated in sleep. This spilled over to populated districts you have mentioned. People were sleeping outside and they warned each other through drumming that triggered everyone to drum after hearing the sound. Whether the Ambulance has been smashed out of misinformation… Read more »
