Two arrested for illegal possession of fuel

Two men are behind bars at Rumphi police station after being arrested for illegal possession of 240 liters of fuel.

Regional police public relation officer for the north Norah Chimwala says a 29-yea-old Fishani Mbotwa and a 41- year-old Robert Gomeka were arrested after they failed to produce documents they used in purchasing the fuel .

“The men who were traveling in the vehicle with registration no; NU 3503 were arrested on Monday  December  12 at Bwengu Trading centre where the police mounted a road block,” she said.

Chimwala also said Mbotwa and Gomeka  are expected to appear before the court soon to answer charges of  illegal possession of fuel.

Mbotwa hails from Mwenelufita village T/A Mwaulambia in Chitipa district while Gomeka hails from Ndalemba village T/A Mwalweni in Rumphi district.

Fuel still remain a scare commodity in Malawi as motorists are spending nights on long queues at pump station.

Energy minister Goodall Gondwe recently attributed the scarcity to people who sell the fuel on the black market.
