Two die due to excessive Kachaso drinking

Police in southern Malawi are patting each other on the back for recording no road accident during the Christmas festive season but two people died due to excessive drinking of alcohol during the same period.

Limbe deputy public relations officer Betetsai Zembeneko said Luka Chitekesa, 60, from Machinjiri in Blantyre went to a Kachaso (locally distilled gin) drinking place on Boxing Day and ordered a 200mls full of the alcoholic drink.

After finishing, he bought another bottle full of the stuff before collapsing and died.

Post-mortem at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Zembeneko said, showed he died of excessive drinking on empty stomach.

He also said a lady from Bvumbwe in Thyolo also died of excessive drinking of kachaso after she drunk during tombstone unveiling in her area.

“We are calling on people to drink responsibly during this festive season,” he said.

Spokesperson for the police in the south says on the other hand, motorists should continue to be careful on the roads so that no accident should be recorded during the New Year festive season.

Central and northern regions are yet to release their data on road accidents during the Christmas period.

They drunk in this way for many years and still survived. Those that drunk excessively just got too much drunk on any day they drunk that way. They either dragged themselves home or slept on the wayside or just slept on the spot. They… Read more »

The way Chrismas is celebrated speaks volumes about the origin of the occassion. Heathen things can not be christianized. Let us read the Bible to understand how we can honour Jesus, ni what we are doing.
