Two ESCOM employees killed in Malawi road accident

Two employees of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) have been confirmed dead following a road accident occurred Thursday afternoon, officials have corroborated.

The accident occurred at an area called Chiperoni near Goliyati Turnoff in Thyolo district, according to Joseph Chisamba, Road Safety Officer in the Southern Region.

Chisamba said the vehicle, registration number BQ 3370, was carrying over 20 ESCOM workers who were returning to their respective domiciles from their workplace in Thyolo.

“Two people died on the spot and 18 others were rushed to hospital after sustaining serious injuries,” Chisamba told Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

He said the driver of the vehicle was trying to avoid hitting a pedestrian when in the process he lost control of the steering.

“As a result [of losing control] the vehicle veered off from one place to the other before overturning right away on the spot,” he explained.

Meanwhile, particulars of the two deceased employees have not yet been identified.
