Two hard-core criminals escape from Malawi maximum prison: Zomba

Two dangerous hardcore criminals escaped from Zomba Maximum Security Prison on Tuesday night and they are at  large sending panic among the public.

It is unclear as to how the two could escape because they were staying where maximum security is provided according to prison sources.

“I can conform to you that on the night of Tuesday this week, hardcore and regular escapee Phizza Mwachande found himself outside the cell together with another hardcore  criminal Levi Makoka Maganga who was serving 14 years for armed robbery,” said an insider.

The insider said Maganga is a habitual escapee because he also escaped unlawfully at B block section of the prison with other two inmates on April 5 2012.

“The two inmates that escaped with him were Charles Kulamba and Maneno, a Tanzanian…Maneno was serving life sentence and cannot be traced now. Maganga was apprehended in August this year in Mulanje and was brought back to prison under heavy escort,” said the source.

Another inside source corroborated the escape of Mwachange together with Maganga and added that the two are at large and police are hunting for them.

Prisons department spokesperson Evance Phiri was not available for comment.
