Two Malawi assistant refs flop in FIFA physical test

Only two assistant referees have flopped in the Physical Fitness Test, formerly known as Cooper Test for Fifa and Grade One referees held on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Kamuzu Institute of Sports in Lilongwe.

A total of 42 referees including women referees from across the country participated in the day long exercise, which saw all middle male referees and all female referees that participated passing the test.

Only Blantyre based Fifa assistant referee Jones Chimeza and Lilongwe based Grade One assistant referee Jossam Nkhoma failed the test.

Nkhoma dropped in lap number 11, meaning he will still be eligible to officiate local games including Super League matches while his Blantyre based colleague surrendered after doing nine laps. Only those referees that manage to do 10 laps are allowed to officiate games.

Notable amongst the referees that did well included Fifa referees Denis Ngulube, Anthony Raphael and Duncan Lengani. Controversial Grade One referee Francisco Scova also made it.

However, Lilongwe based Fifa referee Jones Makuwira, Grade One referees Simon Jovinala, who officiated last Saturday’s Super League match between Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers and Leo Ngoleka did not take part in the test for various reasons ranging from sickness to injury.

Assistant referee Boswell Msangu, also from Lilongwe did not take part. The fate of these referees is not yet known but according to the local refereeing authorities, those that failed the test or failed to participate will have another chance in five months time.
