UDF downplay report of Sata, Bashir backing Atupele

Malawi opposition UDF party has described as “complete nonsense” allegations that Sudan’s President Omar Al Bashir and Zambia’s Micheal Sata are bankrolling the party’s torch bearer Atupele Muluzi campaign for May 20 elections.

Reports indicated that Bashir has bought two helicopters for Atupele  and Sata is also financing the UDF presidential hopeful.

But UDF spokesman Ken Ndanga trashed the report as “baseless” saying the two African leaders are not injecting any support to their campaign.

Ndanga: No foreign Head of State is financing Atupele

“No Head of State in Africa or outside has contributed any penny to the UDF party for its campaign,” said Ndanga in a statement.

The UDF spokesman sought to play down reports of Sata and Bashir funding, saying such reports “should be ignored.”

Said Ndanga: “During this campaign period there will be such rumours apparently because some sections of the Malawi did not expect that President Atupele Muluzi would rebuild the UDF party and mount a formidable campaign like he has done.”
