UDF MP Kaliati hails JB at Liwonde elevation as Senior Chief
President Joyce Banda is a “genuine democrat”, said UDF Parliamentarian for Machinga Central, Jones Shaibu Kaliati, when he made his welcome remarks at the official elevation ceremony of Traditional Authority Liwonde to Senior Chief at Namandanje Primary School in Liwonde, Machinga on Tuesday.
“I wish to express my hearty appreciation to the President for according me this opportunity to speak here. There was the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Government of the late Mutharika; no opposition MP was allowed to speak at a presidential ceremony like this one; I really appreciate this rare gesture,” said the youthful parliamentarian.
He noted that the people of his area were extremely excited at the elevation of Chief Liwonde to the status of Senior Chief as it was long overdue.
In her speech, the Malawi Head of State directed the relevant ministry to cordon the Lake Malawi National Park off the people around it with an electric fence to deter elephants from straying into villages and causing damage to life and property.
“We have a choice. Either we wipe out all the elephants, or we cordon them off. That’s the choice. As head of state, I cannot allow that elephants must be let loose on my fellow human beings just because we want to preserve them for tourism. If we are serious, let us erect a fence that must keep these animals away from the people,” President Banda emphasized.
Also speaking at the event was ruling PP Deputy Treasurer General and Mangochi Parliamentarian Yusuf Matumula who urged people of Machinga to support President Banda’s development agenda.
