UDF proposes Proportional Representation Voting System to avoid costly by-elections

Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has proposed a review and overhaul of Malawi’s Electoral Systems and Electoral Laws to consider a change from the current First Past The Post system to Proportional Representation.

UDF president Atupele Muluzi made the proposal in Lilongwe on Saturday when the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) updated the party on the status of the determination of the number and boundaries of constituencies for the purposes of the 2025 elections.

MEC has already presented the report to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Democratic Progressive Party, Alliance for Democracy (Aford) and UTM Party.

Thus, Saturday was the turn for the former governing UDF to get the update.

While reaffirming his party’s support to the electoral body, Muluzi observed that Malawi is losing millions of kwacha to hold by-elections.

He said this would be dealt with if the country adopted the Proportional Representation System.

“We strongly believe that the Proportional Representation System would be more representative and would help save resources for other worthwhile projects,” said Muluzi.

MEC Chairperson Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale said the Commission has welcomed the proposal and would consult with other stakeholders to see the best way forward.

  1. Every one right to vote should be excericed and not on proportional basis. We have already lost billions worth medication so yhis cost we can bear.

  3. We are tired of choosing mediocres in this country we need to consider choosing the elites. First degrees for a MPs a minimum and second degrees and good track records for president. How can we mere accept English speaking as a qualification yet in offices an English speaking person with good MSCE has entry point of being a messenger?

  4. Zwitso…u want to rule through the back door…you are done…you will never rule Malawi…go with your father to get back your money from the traditional healer who lied to you !!

This is a good suggestion but it requires extensive research on whether it solves the current problems and how; how best it can be as compared to the current system; the available types of PR systems like Party Listing vote-open /closed, choice voting, mixed member proportion(MMP) etc which one can best suit Malawi. As well as how the State President will then be chosen and which legal structure can be changed.

  7. Failures won’t cease to propose trash after trash. The man is at the end of his political tether.
