UDF set for policy conference Oct. 31 in Lilongwe

Malawi’s opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) will hold the first ever political party Policy Conference  in the history of Malawi at Cresta Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe on Thursday.

In his acceptance speech after being elected president of the UDF party last year, Atupele Muluzi promised party members and delegates to the party convention that the party will hold a special conference where it will discuss policies.

Atupele’s commitment to holding the policy conference is likely to boost his issue based campaign.

He will also use the event to finally unpack his much publicised “Agenda for Change”.

Earlier he met veteran politcian and statesman Harry Thompson who has been invited as one of the “special guests” to the conference.

Atupele has been emphasising the need for “the fusion of the wise and the young to bring a rich blend of elements of leadership”.

The holding of the policy conference also reflects a new approach in the UDF party in dealing with issues of the manifesto where the process was the privy of some chosen technocrats.

UDF spokesperson, Ken Ndanga told Nyasa Times in an interview that all is set for the historic event that will cost the party K20 million.

According to Ndanga the conference whose theme is” delivering change in Malawi” will draw a participants from a cross section of people including diplomats and ordinary Malawians from all the administrative districts of the country.

“Special care has been taken to ensure that the Conference does not become elitist and a follow up conference has been organised for the party faithful to vote and approve the outcomes to the Conference,” said Ndanga.

He said at the conference the party will discuss how Malawi has been trying to do too many things at the same time and as a result of its limited resource envelope has in fact achieved very little.

The party’s aim is to narrow down the areas that can deliver transformative change. There are three areas of focus; how the UDF administration will; create jobs and wealth for all Malawians especially the youth, social protection programs targeting  all the poor and vulnerable and ensuring that the public pulse delivers for all Malawians.

” We are now ready for the event. At the moment all the logistics are in place and invitations to all the delegates including diplomats and the civil society have been dispatched. A detailed programme is also available on the UDF Website www. udfmalawi.org” said Ndanga.

He said that the UDF party is positioning itself as a government in waiting and the conference has been specially designed to ensure that it demonstrates to Malawians how it intends to deliver Change in Malawi.

“The emphasis will be on the HOW rather than the WHAT. We will be offering solutions to the country’s problems.” He said.

On why it has taken long for the party to hold the conference after it was scheduled to take place in June, the UDF publicist said an event like this one needed a lot of time to prepare to ensure that the Conference is well organized
