Umthetho Cultural Festival set for August 12: ‘To focus on women, youth empowerment’

This year’s Umtheto—an an annual cultural gathering for the Zwangedaba Ngoni’s—will be held on August 12 next month, and organizers say this year’s ceremony will be different because it will focus on women and youth empowerment.

Chairperson of the organizing committee, Victor Madhlopa, said the event—pegged at a K30 million budget—will this year be preceded by women and youth conferences.

Madhlopa said things will be completely different this year.

“What will happen is that there will be a women conference which will run back to back with a youth conference. The idea is that we want our women and youth to benefit from a number of aspects,” said Madhlopa.

Some of the topics to be discussed during the conference, he said, include gender-based violence, women economic empowerment, child marriages, women participation in decision making and women access to land.

Madhlopa said they are expecting over 5 000 attendees to this year’s ceremony which will be celebrated under the theme: Women and Culture: Ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere.
