Vehicle hits two Poly students to trigger riots

Two students of the Malawi Polytechnic were reportedly killed on Thursday when they were on their way to the campus at the road traffic lights as  a lorry belonging to a construction company hit two university students .

The students reacted by going to rampage to smash the truck and set it ablaze.

They road which is the main highway in the commercial city of Blantyre has since been barricaded by the irate students

The identities of the students hit by the truck- all female – were not released by the college authorities.

According to student,  the girls were crossing from the Annex towards the main campus when the truck hit them.

The traffic lights at the scene have not been operational after they were vandalised.

Southern Region Deputy Police spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa said they are investigating the incident.
