Vuwa distributes maize to 600 hunger stricken families in Nkhata Bay

With no hope and nowhere to go, 600 households in Nkhatabay Central Constituency trapped in the arms of hunger breathed a sigh of relief when they received a donation of 7, 500 Kilograms of maize from former member of parliament of the area  Symon Vuwa Kaunda.

According to latest Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee figures, more than 2.8 million people will face hunger in the coming lean season (October –March) following severe floods and drought that ruined this year’s harvest.

Kaunda is on a week-long food distribution campaign in the area that covers Traditional Authority (TA) Mkumbira in the district.

“People from this area have not been spared with the current hunger that has hit the country. This is the area I come from and these are the same people I have been serving for so long that’s why I felt the need to come in with the assistance,” said Kaunda who is also the presidential advisor on national unity and parliamentary affairs.

He said that the Bible as well as the Quran “teaches us to give and we have to emulate the same.”

“As you know a hungry family can never be productive, hence giving them food makes them healthy and productive not only to their families but the nation at large,” said Kaunda.

In his remarks, Group Village Man Khoza of the area said Kaunda’s example is worth emulating.

“In the areas which have been struck by hunger, there are a people within the same that can help fellow dwellers, its not all the time that people should wait for government to assist them, we can do it ourselves and this is the way to go if we want to save the country,” said the chief.

He added, “Since the end of the last growing season we have gone through hell because what people got from their harvests could not take them through the whole year, we are now thankful that we will have Nsima on the table.”

Recently, different organisations, companies and well wishers have been assisting people in the country.
