Watayachanga Chirwa laid to rest in military honours

Family, friends and political leaders gathered at Yolamu Village in Traditional Authority Mabilabo to lay late Robson Watayachanga Chirwa, a former Cabinet minister during Kamuzu Banda’s one-party State, to rest.

Leaders  across the political divide eulogized the late Chirwa as a man who was humble, dedicated, peaceful, development-oriented, prayerful and a good advisor and  provided solutions to problems.

Former vice-president Khumbo Kachali paid tribute to the contribution Chirwa made to the country.

He told mourners: “We come here today to pay our sincerest and honest respect, give our condolences and to pay tribute to someone who was exceptionally special to Malawi.”

Mourners at the funeral included Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Kasaila who represented President Peter Mutharika, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Grace Chiumia, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera, former official hostess Cecilia Kadzamira and her sister Mary Kadzamira, Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa V and Mzuzu City mayor William Mkandawire.

Kasaila said Chirwa was instrumental in the transition from one party State to multiparty democracy, saying he is someone ”who worked for the good of others.”

The Minister said Mutharika is urging Malawian citizenry to derive wisdom and emulate from the late Chirwa who was very respectful to everyone.

Kasaira said, “President Mutharika is very saddened with the death of Robson Chirwa who holds history of Malawi today. That is why the President thought to declare his death a state funeral as an honour for his achievements for the country.  The President contributed K500, 000 as condolences to the bereaved family.”

He thanked Inkosi M’mbelwa and other chiefs for coming together to mourn and bid farewell to late Robson Chirwa.

Member of Parliament for Mzimba Luwerezi, Deliwe Ngoma, warned fellow politicians not to use the funeral as a political platform but to exercise maturity and mourn the politician and achiever Robson Chirwa.

Leader of opposition in Parliament and President of the Malawi Congress Party, Dr. Lazarous Chakwera said Malawians will not forget the kind of ministerial leadership Robson Chirwa portrayed which was not marred by corruption but only development.

Former Vice President and Member of Parliament for Mzimba South West, Khumbo Kachali said Politicians should emulate from Chirwa whom through his political career was a faithful and dedicated to MCP.

He said the spirit of Robson Chirwa could be happy if unity continue to exist and maintained in the country.

General Secretary for CCAP Synod of Livingstonia, Levi Nyondo reminded politicians to be dedicated to their parties and not to behave like political prostitutes.

He said “Robson Chirwa serves as a lesson to all politicians today. He was faithful, clean and dedicated politician. Today, even in Churches, things have greatly changed. But politicians should learn to love and respect each other.”

Chakwera said the country has lost a true leader.

He said Chirwa was a source of good advice and MCP will greatly miss him.

Chirwa, who was buried with military honours by  Malawi Defence Force (MDF), died aged 86.

He is survived by 6 children and 13 grandchildren.

Emma Mzagada ndi uyo she’s been bed ridden for so many years kusowa chithandizo….koma akadzamwalira ndie zindalama kupereka mmalo mopereka pano to sustain her life. When somebody in the name of Michael Usi offer his assistance to her mwayamba kufuna kumupezera zifukwa….mxiiiii!!!!

Great that government has given late Robson Chirwa the respect that he deserves. May his soul RIP.
