‘We could have died if it wasn’t for Bushiri!’ Balaka welcomes cheap maize

Even with bags on their heads, people in Balaka went home shocked with Prophet  Shephered Bushiri’s generosity of selling them maize at a ridiculously low price.

One of the buyer in Balaka said Bushiri’s initiative has demonstrated his love for humanity.

Some even went home confessing that if it wasn’t for Bushiri’s cheap maize in their area, they could have languished with hunger.

In random interviews with Nyasa Times, several beneficiaries, many felt that what Bushiri is doing is too much for just an individual.

“We just heard that Lucius Banda requested the Prophet to extend the good gesture here in Sosola Village and Mponda. I couldn’t believe it. I just thought it’s hearsays,” said Elufe Shaibu, 68, after purchasing her bag.

She added: “I have been around for years but I have never seen a man with a heart like Prophet Bushiri. He is our God given gift. We could have died if it wasn’t for him. God must protect him.”

Bushiri is currently selling maize at K100 per kilogramme, a move aimed at helping the less privileged across the country, struggling to access the staple food.

The staple, on the private market, is currently fetching around K20 000.

Village Head Sosola was all praise of Prophet Bushiri: “My village has been worst with food shortage. Our people cannot manage to buy the staple at K23 000 per 50 kg bag. If it wasn’t for Prophet Bushiri, our people could have died. Thanks Prophet Bushiri.”

According to Bushiri’s spokesperson, Ephraim Nyondo, thousands turn up in short notice after opening two markets.

“We have opened markets at Mponda and Sosola. We will be opening more in the districts because the need is huge,” he said.

He added that the exercise continues with Thyolo District on Monday where three markets will be opened.

So far, about 5 districts have been touched with #BushiriCheapMaize. They include Mangochi, Ntcheu, Phalombe, Mzimba, Salima and Balaka.
