Witchcraft plane crash’ causes commotion in Kasungu

Kasungu Police Station and Gundani in Kasungu District, on Monday became centres of attraction on Monday as hundreds of people flocked to the places to see an alleged witchcraft plane.

The ‘plane’ is alleged to have ‘crashed’ in Gundani area, in front of a house of one Liness Kaulungo.

According to people close to the house, interviewed by Malawi News Agency (Mana), the object was discovered in the early hours of Monday after Kaulungo went out to answer the call of nature.

The black object, which resembles a small airplane, attracted hundreds of people as the news of its crash spread like wild fire to surrounding areas of Chitete, Chiteyeye and as far as Juma and Kasalika.

Police later went to the scene and took the object to Kasungu Police Station.

People’s attention then shifted to the police station where they gathered to see the ‘plane’.

The crowd outside the station was so huge, it blocked the busy road which vehicles going up north normally use.

The country’s laws do not recognise the existence of witchcraft and police spokesperson Edwin Kaunda said they took the object away for safety reasons.

He said: “We observed that the object was creating commotion in the area, so we took it away to prevent further chaos.”

Kaunda said the object is being kept at the police station, but did not say what action will be taken next.

The incident ignited debate on witchcraft in the country, with some people saying the plane was evidence enough that witchcraft exists while others were of the view that it is difficult to tell from the object itself.

The Holy Book “the Bible” recognises the existence and practice of witchcraft. Paul concludes in Galatians 5:20 that all who practice all sorts of sins including witchcraft will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  19. Such widespread belief in witchcraft is a clear indication of the poor standard of education in Malawi. Anyone with a grasp of science and the laws of nature will not give a moment’s thought to witchcraft, which has no place in 21st century thinking. Instead of jumping to witchcraft as an explanation for something unusual, people should be using their knowledge and intelligence to seek an explanation. Incidentally I know a certain Malawian with a Phd who still believes in witchcraft! So much for his intelligence and the quality of his education.

  29. We can be all naive as we want dismissing the existing of with crafts and some do so to cover up their evil tendencies. I for one do believe that they do exist even amongst white community. I mean even the holly bible does acknowledge, as a matter of fact you can be too civilized to believe in the existing of witch craft, probably because you’ve never been exposed or victimised by this evil practices but technically its plain stupidity.

  40. Does witch craft really exist or is it just another over gloried myth meant to hide some dubious acts of people with divers intentions in their attempt to achieve their ends?
    I really want to know, seriously- as this may help a lot of people who are suffering unsuspectingly.
    Suppose it is real, what methods does those in authority follow to prove and amend the damages inccured by the curlpits ? Is there a law that tries it? Who does one contact if he is being tourtured by the said witches?
    Surely witchcraft is not a new story in our country for people to wonder at it ,if it`s for real, by now there must be a way of stopping these said witches if they are for real, other wise its just an over looked persecution of innocent victims, which is a sorry state of things in this modern democracy.

    I know, people have said that Thindwa cannot be bewitched because iyeyo ndi mfiti nayenso – but trust me, there is no one who can do it simply because they have no proof that witchcraft exists.

  57. I personally believe that witchcraft exists, however I don’t see any evidence here supporting the same. Anybody can make this object inorder to play with the superstitious minds of Malawians. The whole thing sounds and looks ridiculous.

  63. This was supposed to a local kasungu news for entertainment for farmers and some street venders. what is the gain in this, roads and schools disrupted because of an object a dead one for that matter, this is why Africa is behind in development. foolishness at its best
