Woman set on fire by husband
A young woman was allegedly set on fire by her husband in Kasungu after they picked a matrimonial row.
The woman identified as Ester Banda, 28, said her husband set her on fire but according to Station Officer for Kasungu Police, Assistant Commissioner Foloko Gama, the hubby claims she set herself on fire as suicide mission.
Banda is battling for her life at Kasungu District hospital.
Foloko Gama said police have arrested the husband Divason Chunga, 35, to quiz him over the issue. He comes from Biwe village, Mbelwa in Mzimba.
According to a report on Zodiak radio, the woman claimed the she quarried with her husband over her wish to leave her matrimonial home for her mother’s for a breather from persistent marital problems but the husband did not like it.
“On the day of the incident, my husband and I left Chikangawa where he works, for Kapyola village. We were still not agreed as to where I should go. Then he started beating me. I don’t know what happened next but I found myself in the hospital later,” she told the radio.
Mother to the woman, Lucia Phiri accused the husband of torturing her over petty issues every now and then and setting her ablaze. .
“Her body was dumped in a near-by bush and was discovered two days later. She was apparently left for dead,” Phiri claimed.
Police said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
