Youth heckle DPP MP for donating K10 000
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for Chiradzulu West Peter Namatumbo was not impressive at a function in his constituency when he donated K10 000 to a network of girls and said he would give the money at the end of the month.
He was guest of honour at a function organized by Girls Empowerment Network which took place at traditional authority Chitera headquarters on Thursday.
The girls network has a membership of 160 girls who fight against their sexual abuse and being forced into early marriage and also against harmful cultural practices that fuel the spread of HIV.
When it was his turn to address the people, Namatumbo was naturally forced to make a pledge of K10 000 which was not received well especially when he said the girls should check with him at the end of the month to get the money. Some young men reacted to the pledge with sarcasm.
The MP faced an onslaught of booing, heckling and chants of owumila! owumila! (stingy).
Some young men were heard saying,” Aaaaah that little money to all the girls and you are saying they will get it at the end of month? You mean you are that so broke? You are a very useless MP. Come to us we shall give you katapira [usury].”
The pretended not to have heard the young men and when he finished speaking he was seen shaking hands with T/A Chitera, officials from the district council and other invited people.
