Sixteen-year-old Doreen Chapuma outclassed a pool of 19 other young beauty pageants to be crowned Miss Chinamwali in a tightly contested event which took place at Chinamwali Girls Private Secondary School Hall in the eastern side of Malawi’s old capital, Zomba.
The winning contestant faced stiff challenge from Lindiwe Kazembe who was voted First Princess and Abigail Kamaliza who emerged Second Princess.
The event was organized by a crew comprised of Zomba youths aimed at exposing talent that will eventually enable the winner to participate in the Miss Zomba beauty contest scheduled for December later this year.
Doreen won the favour from the three judges when she elegantly performed well in categories of dinner, traditional, casual and office wears.
She also had the confidence coupled with the knack of responding to questions from the judges during quiz time.
“Disbelief is what has filled my heart. I had it tough considering that my friends also prepared well for the event. I owe this success to God and I promise not to disappoint at the Miss Zomba contest,” said Doreen.
The show had its ups and downs midway through when a group of teenagers jumped onto the stage to stop performing artists from Chikanda Township within the city, arguing a crew from Chinamwali is sidelined from events organized by their (Chikanda) colleagues belonging to certain entertainment promotion outfits in the city.
“This show is for Chinamwali crew only. No artist from the other areas is allowed to perform on stage here. We have worked out way to arrange for this and we do not want any disturbances. Get off the stage!” said one of the disgusted youngsters.
New Xool Boyz (NXB) Crew comprised of artists from Matawale and Malonje in the area stole the show with one of their dancehall tracks titled Turn on the music.
