Zomba Mayor assures football fans on maintenance of ground

Zomba City Council (ZCC) mayor Joana Ntaja has assured football fans in Malawi’s eastern region city on maintenance of Community Centre ground.

The assurance comes as a result of an indaba ZCC held over the weekend with some concerned football fans in the old capital over the
deteriorating standard of the ground.

Among other things, the meeting discussed short and long term solutions. Her worship the mayor acknowledged the financial constraints the council is facing to meet the requirements of the ground.

“It is true we have to come together as residents of Zomba to chart the way forward on management of Zomba Community Centre ground. We have been handicapped in one way or the other but we can do better to maintain this ground,” she said.

She then indicated that the council will provide two vehicles which will be ferrying black soil to be filled on the ground. Meanwhile,
work on the ground is supposed to start on Monday.

Speaking in an interview with Nyasa Times, concerned football fans publicity secretary Alfred Chasowa described the meeting as fruitful.

“We had a wonderful meeting with council management over the poor condition of Zomba Community Centre ground. We have made some headway on the matter and our committee has been mandated to monitor the progress. As short term measure, we will make sure that in three weeks time the pitch should be watered and maintained,” he said.

He said his committee will work hand in hand with the council to ensure that the remaining TNM Super League games involving Karonga United, Blantyre United and Mighty Wanderers should be hosted at the ground.

During the meeting, one individual who do not want to be named, donated 40 liters of fuel to the cause. Representatives from the
Malawi Defence Force (MDF) also offered to render some services during the maintenance period of the ground.

You see Mama Mayor this is the time you can show the world that you can bring development to the City. Now is the time you can win the investors in football stadium when the government is not being given money by donors. You can win them by going to them directly. They can help you to have a new stadium there.
