Zomba City Council has granted freedom of the city to the 9 Malawi Rifles -Changalume Barracks as a token for good service to the people of Zomba and Malawi as a whole.
Freedom of the City is an ancient honour granted to martial organisations, allowing them the privilege to march into the city with drums beating and colours flying.
Speaking during the event that marked the freedom, Mayor for Zomba City her worship Melia Douglous said the council has decided to grant the freedom to Changalume Barracks for their great service to the people of Malawi and Zomba City in particular.
“Martial freedom of the city is an entirely ceremonial honour, usually bestowed upon a unit with historic ties to the area, as a token of appreciation for their long and dedicated service and so today here at Zomba City we grant this freedom in appreciating the 9 Malawi rifles,” said Douglous.

The granting of the freedom of the City was preceded by a March of soldiers from Changalume barracks around the city of Zomba and it ended at the Civic Offices where the soldiers gave military honours to mayor Douglous.
Speaking after being granted the freedom the Second in command at Changalume Barracks Major Raphael M’bobo Phiri described the ‘freedom” that they have been granted as a bond of the friendship that already exists between the people of the city of Zomba and Changalume barracks.
Major M’bobo Phiri said as the military, they will work together with the city in different ways in a bid to improve different sectors of humanity for the residents and business community of the city.
