Speaking to Nyasa Times in an exclusive interview on Sunday, one of the organisers, Director and co-Founder of Mizu Foundation Maxwell Phiri said the event offers an innovate way of crowd funding, promoting tourism and local entrepreneurship; whilst creating a fun venue to get healthy and make a difference in a sustainable way that doesn’t rely heavily on constant donations.

“This event is aimed to promote tourism industry in Malawi, raise funds for charity and highlight the importance of healthy living among the youths and all Malawians. This is our second year to host this event; the first one took place last year. Thankfully, we had a good turn out and everyone had a good time.

“Our participants come from all walks of life. From local Malawians, expatiates, people just travelling and people around the area. We are going to have a pre-party on 26th August to celebrate and open the event officially,” Phiri disclosed.

He further added that this year’s funds will be donated at Billy Malawi Project and Chembe water project.

The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust works to improve the overall health status of the village of Cape Maclear (Chembe Village) through the provision of a medical clinic and health centre. The Trust provides educational opportunities and support. It is the objective of the Trust to provide relief of suffering and depravation in this community.

And the aim of Chembe Water Project is to provide safe drinking water at Chembe Village, Cape Maclear on the shores of Lake Malawi. Traditionally, the people of the village have drawn their drinking water from the shore. However this has become contaminated and is no longer safe resulting in illness and high mortality especially amongst the children.

Activities at the Cape Maclear Triathlon will include swimming, cycling and running.

The event will be spiced up with performances by Malawi’s Rock n Roll superstar Zwangie, Tigris, Ishan Capital, Adrian Kwelepeta, Neil Nayer, DJ Maya and DJ Red Eye Dread.

According to the event’s website, www.capemacleartriathlon.com  everyone is welcome to take part in the Cape Maclear Triathlon and one doesn’t have to be a professional athlete. Would be participants can sign up to compete in the amateur component as an individual or as a team of 3 with each taking on one event.
