China ‘commodity aid’ for Malawi: Donate Police vehicles

Malawi Police will receive motor vehicles donated by the Chinese government in the form of commodity aid, Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe told parliament on Friday.

The country is grappling with increased cases of armed robberies and recently official from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China s warned that Chinese investors may decide to relocate to neighbouring countries due to insecurity in the country.

China has decided to empower Malawi Police in cracking down on a recent surge in violent crime in the country.

Gondwe said the Chinese commodity aid is worth K2.3billion (about US$5 million) in form of vehicles.

“This will be additional to some 50 vehicles procured by the government [of Malawi] during the year and will go very far in relieving government of the need to procure more vehicles for police in the 2015/16 financial year,” said Gondwe in his Budget statement.

Gondwe said it is “crucial” that Malawi should start restructuring its fiscal framework without expecting budgetary support.

  19. ujeni says:

Lets differentiate cars for crime fighting and vehicles used to qwell riots. The vehicle in picture is not fit fir crime fighting but for riots. Will wait and see what kind of vehicles are coming. Dont forget once a upon a time dozzy Malawi bought TATA vehicles for Army and Police, that was a joke, who buys clay toys for your children?

  20. bullshit says:

Vehicles on their own cannot win the war against bandits. Malawi government needs to employ more people and train to be professional police officers who will do their best to serve the community and the country and not to enrich themselves through bribery and other dodgy means as is the case at the moment.

  21. Wamandasi says:

It doesn’t worth a celebration that we have more police vehicles. This is the sign of deterioration of moral system. Place a police at each corner of the street is negative sign.

Watch out our constitution. Be careful that it must not slip into a secular state. Otherwise if it is secular state what the point of arresting anybody?

The government must support religious and education institutions to teach and promote good moral conducts. But if the government legalises Chamba, A prostitute will have the claim. too. so too will the abortionist. If other stupid conduct are legal we can as well legalise suicide, homosexuals, transgender, bisexuals.

The government must ban all stupid activisms. They must ban publication of those too. The must not even be given platform to air their views. Kamuzu banned all nonsense and the country was better off in moral sense.

All minor crimes nobody must stay in jail but rather do public service to save prison costs and shame the offender. Like Cashgaters must back each tambala cash the difference they must work for free in hospital, prison, public roads and stay at their homes eat their food, use their transport etc

  22. Alex Likoswe says:

Minister, check how these guys misuse vehicles. From rank of inspector, everyone has a government car. Gross misuse
