Civo frustrate Mafco: As Blue Eagles edge KB

Civo United FC on Saturday, December 28, 2013 relegated Mafco to the third position on the TNM Super League final log table after restricting the Soccer Instructors to a goal-less draw in a match played at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

The Soccer Instructors from Salima needed a win against the CivilServants to be crowned champions or end as runners-up, depending on the final verdict from Super League of Malawi (Sulom) regarding the abandoned match between Mighty Wanderers and Silver but the draw means they have finished behind fellow soldiers Moyale Barracks, who crashed Mzuzu United 4-1.

The win by Moyale means the Nicholas Mhango boys have wrapped up their league assignments with 50 points from 28 games, a point above Mafco, who have finished with 49 points.

Kamuzu Barracks, also from the Malawi Defence Force failed to take advantage of the result at Civo to claim the third-place, when they fell 1-0 against Blue Eagles at Silver Stadium.

Midfielder Mecium Mhone struck the lone goal 40 minutes into the game to take his side level on 47 points with KB, who have still maintained the fourth position on goal-difference.

The Civo, Mafco match was disrupted by a heavy downpour, which delayed the start of the second half. People had to drain water from the pitch after half-time for the game to resume.

Five minutes after resumption, midfielder Patrick Gunde appeared to have put the servants ahead with a fine connection of a rebound from Gerald Nkungula attempt but the goal was ruled out for off-side.

Civo have now finished their campaign on 10th position with 36 points from 28 games, just like Epac FC, who have gone down to 11th position on goal-difference.
