Ex-Malawi Police officer took part in K46.4m Petroda robbery

The criminals, who police say are still at large, also snatched two rifles from the police officers.

However, one of the rifles, a K2C serial number K007376, has been recovered so far.

Police have also recovered five rounds of official ammunitions but suspect that the criminals used two bullets from a police firearm and went away with three rounds live bullets.

No. A5517 Sgt. Anthony Mkokho was killed on the scene whereas his partner No. B3060 Constable James Clifford was shot in the head and is admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital.

Police suspect that a former police officer and three others whose identities (names withheld) were behind the attack. A drivers license and an ATM Card were found in the car used by the criminals.

The criminals attacked the minibus near Kamuzu Central Hospital Roundabout in the administrative capital.

The armed thugs, using BS 6189 Nissan Tilda Soloon–stolen from Isaland Investment and real registration MJ  7494–unexpectedly blocked the minibus and shot at the security officers.

Sgt. Mkokho was killed on the scene while Constable Clifford was shot in the head and is admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital.

After snatching the cash and upon reaching Chitukuko (Area 47) , they attacked a Nissan Bongo Minibus MH 6100  driven by Gerald Tsogolani.

They shot in the air to scare away passengers and subsequently hijacked the minibus.

The Nissan Bongo minibus was eventually recovered near Majesty Lodge.

Meanwhile, Police have said investigations into the matter have been intensified.

  5. Likoma Economist says:

Any armed robbery or crime is a potential threat to national security – especially when the security agents (army or police) are involved and are using official guns. If our govt is serious, they need to take this seriuously. If you cannot control your boys, can you seriously prevent a Coup?

  6. Likoma Economist says:

I want to agree with the possible link of too many (unregulated) refugees & the increasing crime levels in Mlw. Mlw is the only country on earth that allows these refugees to literaly do what they want. Some of them ex-soldiers, hardcore criminals, terorists, al-queda, al-shabab, boko haram (wth lots of £ and $) are acquiring assets: land, houses, registering companies, etc. And we watch as our resources are being siphoned to Pakistan, Rwanda, Burundi, Nigeria, etc. Our children (many of them less educated for obvious reasons) are slowly becoming tenants or slaves to foreign nationals. Most of our national assets are being destroyed by foreigners who have no commitment to the development of Mlw – e.g. Chikangawa, Kayelekela, etc.
Of course there are many factors affecting insecurity including unemployment, poverty, low salaries in security services (which eventually promotes corruption and collussion with criminals) etc. We can minimise crime by tackling major issues, and I believe uncontrolled immigration is a major issue here!
One day (and I am sure it will be soon), we will experience what has been happening in Kenya, and next door Tanzania. If these terrorist can have a field day in Kenya, what makes us think they cannot have a party at Game Stores or Shoprite? The armed robberies are early signs – testing your security system.
Malawi secuirty wake up! Likoma Economist has warned you!

WE are living in a failed state. A country where the president has become an absentee whore master who is only interested in collecting his salary and allowances. He needs to come out and address Malawians or better yet parliament on the state of security and economy in this country. The prime minister can not be left alone to be giving political advice for which he is not an expert. Address the causes of the security lapse in this country. Why the police are involved in serious crimes. Remember the fish rots from the head. DPP syndicate at work to tarnish the image of the chief of Police and the minister of security., I smell a rat here.

I feel sorry for the police officer who died in the line of duty

But them alone can’t do anything

Let’s rise above petty hatred and politics

The moment you see som1 acting suspicious report

    It’s the “UBALE” mindset
    That needs to change

  29. Black and white says:

The Police need to revisit their escort services. I suggest that they should have special trained teams for this service which should be well equipped including bullet proof vests. While not being judgmental it appears our policemen are not fully alert during such operations and have been taken by surprise. After the FMB shooting I shed tears when I heard the widow lamenting that her husband died simply because he was on an assignment which was to earn him a meagre K6000 that day. Really?

    1. Inhumane Rights Activist says:

I totally blame 101 per cent the Petroda management who are Asians. It is a fact that majority of Asians even Sarna, Arkay Plastics, Polypack, do not use registered armoured cash transit vans. They do not want to pay G4s, Team Security or any other security company which can ably handle cash between the point of collection to the point of deposit. Last year, one mmwenye was attacked near Umoyo House in Blantyre while carrying millions and was disembarking from a simple Toyota Corolla into the nearby NBS Bank. Why they don’t use such cash delivery services, which are even insured it beggars belief. Kaya kufuna kuseva kaya chani, kaya mwina its in the Quran I don’t know. But now look ta how it has cost the life of such an innocent young man with a family.

  30. ujeni says:

We have been saying this for some time time, again and again and again. Armed robberies in Malawi have involvement of the police and army personel. Guns used are properties of the police and army. This DPP government of thieves just dont want to listen.

The same military personel shield their friends when they do an armed robbery. Its a halmark of a failed state.

  38. Mphatso says:

    These crimals will be caught but expect these things;
    1. Alteast a police officer or army officer involved.
    2 . Inside arrangement.
    3. To be let down by the laws. Our MPz formulate stupid laws in such away that no
    one is punished.

Nothing is in the right place in Malawi except poverty.

  41. thosimo matapwata says:

Malawi is a country where foreigners/refugees are allowed to run away from the camps and mingle around with common people in the yards. They are even allowed to own businesses and build mansions. Some of these foreigners /refuges were criminals in their own countries where they fled and hid in Malawi. They are among the ones causing havoc in the cities
Please revisit the laws on refugees. let them all go back to the camps. Malawi is becoming a dangerous country to invest

  42. Boy says:

This is very sad indeed ” do you remember what the late Bingu ordered…”shoot to kill”. he knew what he was talking about. We cannot lose people in this manner. Now, as soon as they are apprehended….do we expect the thugs to be released on bail??? If not, then the application has to be uniform across the board. Just as people have often complained….a person murders and a few days he is seen on the streets out on bail!!!

  43. Kadakwiza says:

    Very sad indeed.
