JB says construction of Phalombe hospital to start
President Joyce Banda has assured the people of Phalombe that construction of the long-awaited Phalombe District would start soon.
She said all ‘paper work’ between the Malawi Government and the financiers of the project has been concluded and that what is left is the identification of a qualified contractor.
“Next time I am in Phalombe, it will be to lay the foundation stone of this extremely important project,” said Banda on Wednesday when presided over the official elevation ceremony of Chief Chiwalo of Phalombe who is now Senior Chief Chiwalo.
Malawi Government and the Saudi Fund for Development in August 2013 signed a K4 billion loan deal towards the construction of Phalombe District Hospital.
The loan fund which was approved in June by parliament will cater for the construction of a hospital complex, provision of medical equipment, construction of 60 staff houses, consultancy services and project monitoring.
The total cost of the project is US$25.5 million and it is co-financed by the Malawi government to the tune of US$ 6.5 million and US$7 million by BADEA.
The main objective of the project is to provide easy access to quality primary and secondary health care services to the people Phalombe district.
