Mtawali drops experienced pros in Malawi final squad: ‘Selection based on form not names’

Malawi national football team coach Ernest Mtawali has dropped experienced players including captain Joseph Kamwendo for the Africa Cup of Nations tie against Swaziland on 6 September.

Announcing the squad at Football Association of Malawi’s premises Chiwembe Technical and Development Centre on Friday Mtawali said he had found out that Kamwendo, Harry Nyirenda, Essau Kanyenda lacked game time.

But Mtawali, who appeared at ease and composed, said the he would select players based on their form rather than names.

“I have done my research and consulted on the selection of the players. Joseph Kamwendo has been the leader for the past 10 years but he lacked game time just as Harry Nyirenda,” Mtawali said.

However he assured that the door was still open for the players to return should they prove to be good.

“The door will never be closed for any player. If Esau is going to bang n goals at Polokwane,  I will call him back.”

The coach has entrusted the responsibility of putting back the Flames campaign back on course in the youthful players drawn his Under-20 side while he was in charge a year ago.

He said admitted that it would be a tall order for Malawi to win in Swaziland.

“There’s pressure for any game. I talked to Charles Manda who is now coaching in Swaziland who has offered me tips on how they play,” he said.

“With tactical discipline we should come up with a good result.”

Football Association of Malawi (FAM)General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda, who accompanied Mtawali to the news conference, said the coaches were given the support in preparations for the game.

“We need to win Swaziland and the coaches came up with the squad. I believe they are responsible and we should be able to win in Swaziland,” Nyirenda said.

Meanwhile, Limbikani Mzava has been named captain with Chiukepo Msowoya his vice-captain.

The team is expected to leave on Sunday for South Africa where they will camp for at least five days before leaving for Swaziland for the encounter.

leaving the captain behind is a mistake it is better to bench him.experienced players like kanyenda are also important to the team the same to our assistant coach he has achieved nothing in malawi football but still more electing him just becoz of experience. anyway am waiting for your results have a nice journey

  19. Wanga ndi yemweyo says:

For a long time we have been crying that our coaches pick “names” rather than talent. Now we have a coach who has agreed with us, he has picked players based on performance, and we have started throwing “old names” at him for him to consider. What’s wrong with us Malawians? Let us leave the coach to try what he thinks will help us before we start interfering. After all, zinazo zinalephereka kale, so why should we stick to it? If this doesn’t work, we shall have tried something new anyway! And trying new things when the old ones are not working is the logical thing to do. Apatseni mpata anyamata achisodzerawa nawonso ayese, mwina angatithandize. Bravo Ernest!

  58. uyu says:

Best selection ever. Its a team full of hungry, fearless, unstoppable, tireless and match-makers type of players. I dont expect swaziland to survive or withstand the pressure in swaziland. Ukweche okhaokha.

The way Enerst has selected players indicates Flames is to attack and not defend as Young Chimodzi used to believe when playing away. Let Esau fight to reclaim his place otherwise He is still the best striker in the country when taking on defenders and he creates pressure. Best wishes Enerst and Ramadhan, we love u guys.

  64. Lovemaniac 91 says:

If u lose to Swaziland, FAM must fire u, coz u cowchies ur failing us. Kinnah wil take de seat, coz FSS has fired him. Wat a poor cowch!

  65. Mwayi Lusaka says:

Every leader brings in his ideas and his plans. He therefore looks for those whom he thinks he can ably fit in implement his plans and ideas. Its politics of leadership and management . Football is not spared from this theory! But all fans can expect its results no matter what ideology the new manager brings in!

  66. Sportsman says:

Harry Nyirenda is an experienced prayer and akumenya ma Game. We really nid him @ the back. Joseph Kamwendo amayendera tsiku and u can’t easily pridict him. Leaving him is nt good enough. U could have taken him and u can easily substitute him if he is not playing well. He is well experience and knows how to handle a game when tempers r high. But the squad is good bt don’t leave experience aside

  67. daro says:

If we loss don’t fire the coach fire the players coach doesn’t play soccer, players did. any way good lucky boys!!!

  68. Blessed Banda says:

That’s better. We cannot have a population of 16 million and have the same underperforming players yet a country has many talented players. If Namibia with its 2 million people can produce a squad and win COSAFA why not us with 8 times the population of Namibia. Lets be serious on scouting talents in junior leagues so that when these old names underperform thse should immediately be dropped.

  69. What we want is the results and not names, if you fail to bring good results you will also be chopped off, or fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
