Phoya lost to Mijiga, reads PP ‘official’ results

The ruling People’s Party (PP) returning officers at the primaries held in Blantyre Rural East have lodged results showing Minister of Lands and the leader of government business in parliament, Henry Duncan Phoya lost.

According to the results seen by Nyasa Times, the officials conducting elections have indicated that Steven Mijiga emerged winner with 2 321 votes followed by Sambalikagwa Mvona with 1 748 and Phoya’s 1497.

But on Wednesday Phoya results were seen to be polling about 5,300 votes.

PP officials said about 3,000 votes for Phoya were declared null and void after being discovered to have been “stuffed in the polling boxes.

Sources in the ruling party said some officials have confirmed rigging in favour of Phoya.

A PP official a Kachigamba is said to have offered to testify the fraudulent activities, according to sources.

PP acting secretary general Paul Maulidi said the party was still investigating the matter.
