MP Jonas’ switch to MCP ruffles feathers in Dowa, primaries halted

Parliamentarian Shadreck Jonas’ switch to MCP from DPP after falling in the latter’s primaries for Lilongwe City Centre constituency – for which he is Member of Parliament – has led to cancellation of MCP primary polls in Dowa as some competitors feel it is unfair for Jonas to be given a chance when he already lost out in another party’s
primaries.

Nyasa Times has established that Jonas made the switch from DPP to the country’s first ruling party on 3rd January this year after failing in the primaries.

Lately, Jonas expressed interest to contest in Dowa Central MCP primaries.

Harlod Masangu, one of the candidates for the Dowa Central MCP polls, accused the party’s leadership especially President Lazarus Chakwera for taking sides with a stranger.

“It’s unfair that the party has been parading him like a hero recently and they have accepted to contest in the primaries when they know he is a newcomer in the party which is contrary to our party provisions,”
complained Masangu.

During Chakwera’s recent whistle stop tour in the Central Region, he welcomed Jonas and introduced him to the party members at Madisi in Dowa.

But Jonas described the complaints as “mere politicking.”

He said: “Some people are always afraid of others for no apparent reason. I don’t think there is a problem with me as contesting as a parliamentarian for the party [MCP] because the leadership has already accepted me.”
