Two Malawi female pilots: Steady take-off

The notion in airline business that girls are to be air hostess and boys to be pilots does no longer hold. After the first Malawi female pilot, Fellie Mkandawire there is a new lady on the deck, Yolanda Kaunda.

For both women, flying was a part of their childhood.

The first female pilot, Fellie Mkandawire stopped flying while she was a senior first officer.

But the new lady on the deck, Yolanda Kaunda has attained the rank of captain which is the highest level of responsibility.

Mkandawire was among many Malawians who took to Facebook to congratulate Kaunda.

She dispelled confusions surrounding the announcement of Kaunda as Malawi’s first ever female captain.

“While I was the first female Malawian pilot, there are, within the pilot profession, different ranks. I stopped flying some years back with the rank of senior first officer. Yolanda has just attained the rank of Captain.

“This is indeed a landmark achievement in Malawian aviation history. Congratulations captain,” wrote Mkandawire.

The two are trending on social media as role models to Malawian girls to study and use education as key to success.

Title of the story is misleading. It is supposed to read Two Female Captains. There are many other Malawian female pilots. But these two are the only so far to have qualified as Captains

  11. James Mhango says:

This a very unprofessional article like many Nyasa times articles, I don’t know what your agenda is. I can only guess what the agenda is by looking at the comments here which are not healthy. If you report such stories please be exhaustive and inform us more. What is he background of these pilots. How many hours hove they flown, where did they train.

Please educate the nation and not sensitize. This is not a political platform. Aero planes fly mostly on autopilot , there is no special thing about this. Talk of Air Malawi, what type of planes , state of airports, you know its pathetic stories bit you choose to write this cheap article.

Muheziwa (comment 1) is the most foolish person on earth, You are talking of a pilot as a well educated person? Do you know that the first Malawian to buy an aeroplane was a lomwe? 34. torgo nudho says:

now do you see why you journalists are never taken seriously and were given kabaza refunds by acb in salima? you can’t just post a story of national importance like this without any background info or details.

who is she? how old? where did she train? what aircraft does she fly? what airline? what about the female malawi army pilot you featured last month? what about that masauli girl who used to fly planes 10 years ago? why did this other mkandawire lady in your feature quit flying? was her licence revoked?

very simple things to deep thinkers like me. mij does it again….

  35. Muheziwa says:

Paja atumbuka ndi ophunzira, alomwefe tikhalira mulahko ndi cashgate yomweyo.
