Two Malawi female pilots: Steady take-off

The notion in airline business that girls are to be air hostess and boys to be pilots does no longer hold. After the first Malawi female pilot, Fellie Mkandawire there is a new lady on the deck, Yolanda Kaunda.

For both women, flying was a part of their childhood.

The first female pilot, Fellie Mkandawire stopped flying while she was a senior first officer.

But the new lady on the deck, Yolanda Kaunda has attained the rank of captain which is the highest level of responsibility.

Mkandawire was among many Malawians who took to Facebook to congratulate Kaunda.

She dispelled confusions surrounding the announcement of Kaunda as Malawi’s first ever female captain.

“While I was the first female Malawian pilot, there are, within the pilot profession, different ranks. I stopped flying some years back with the rank of senior first officer. Yolanda has just attained the rank of Captain.

“This is indeed a landmark achievement in Malawian aviation history. Congratulations captain,” wrote Mkandawire.

The two are trending on social media as role models to Malawian girls to study and use education as key to success.

Title of the story is misleading. It is supposed to read Two Female Captains. There are many other Malawian female pilots. But these two are the only so far to have qualified as Captains
