There were 25 Malawians of the 42 people on board according to officials of Immigration Department at Mwanza Border post  where the bus, registration number SZ 0002, passed.

The bus involved in an accident with a haulage truck at Mtuli Bridge on the 22km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway.

According to a statement from Zimbabwe  Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, the  bus driver was trying to avoid a collision with the truck when he lost control, resulting in the bus veering off the road and plunging into a ditch.

Nyathi confirmed that 10 people died on the spot while 3 others died on admission to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.

The truck driver Wonderful Nyamurambe alleged that he saw a bundle of dumped clothes in the middle of the road and stopped his truck, presuming the bundle was a human being, according to police.
