Two convicts in Karonga are the centre of attraction at Karonga District Hospital because they are bleating and behaving like dogs, jumping up and down in goat style forcing prison officials to chain them.

The two; 26 year old Daudi Mwalughali and 29 year old  Safari Mkandawire  old both of Mwalughali village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in the district were sentenced to nine months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing two goats.

Malawi Police refused to comment on the issue, saying as convicts, they were now under the control of prison authorities.

Rodrick Mpata, a police officer at Karonga however aid he had heard that the two convicts have lost their normal speech and were being guarded by prison authorities for the bizarre disease and behavior.

One prison official said hospital officials were administering anaethestic drugs in order to induce them into sleep all the time because they were jumping up and down in goat style and bleating like dogs.

Hospital officials said they were yet to find out what was the problem but relatives of the two have asked that they be released immediately so that they can consult witchdoctors.

The relatives said the matter was beyond medical solution.

Their mothers Lerner Nyankhonde as well as Edasi Msongole who are the guardians told Nyasa Times on Wednesday that the illness is unnatural.

“We suspect that these are the consequences of the goat they stole and we have pleaded with the owner of the goat to let us pay everything he wants in exchange with the lives of our beloved sons but he is not helping us,” said Msongole.

“Even the men of God have tried their best but to no avail and we are now appealing to the well wishers to bail out our sons from the problem,” Nyankonde added.

When contacted for a comment, the owner of the goat Mr. Lweska denied of being behind the illness.

“Maye be they stole somebody’s goats again because the two already paid me K29 000 I charged them, therefore, if anything is  to happen is not my faul,  those people are not in my hands but police.”

Since when have dogs started to bleat and how do you describe a witchcraft related problem a disease? Such type of distortions in our reporting is what takes Malawian journalism to take the tail in any queue when it comes to ethical and professional artistic reporting. Where is JAMA and what are doing in despicable workmanship like what is being experienced? Ntchito kutsutsa za ndale basi?

This is Karonga I know. My advice is that the parents should go to Vilaure to the west, they will found a cloth tied, they should untie it. the boys will be ok.
