25 Malawi soldiers critical after car accident

About 25  Malawi Defence Force  (MDF) soldiers are battling for their lives at  a hospital in Zomba after a Tata truck they were travelling in was involved in a terrible accident at Changalume Barracks due to the break failure.

A visit by Nyasa Times reporter at Zomba Central Hospital Tuesday evening found that over 26 soldiers have been seriously injured and admitted to the hospital with 17 other soldiers treated as out patients.

One of the soldiers who was involved in the accident told  Nyasa Times that accidentthe driver lost control as he was trying to control the vehicle when it developed brake faults.

Doctors  at the facility said most of the soldiers sustained deep cuts in their heads, back injuries and others have fractured their hands.

“There are multiple injuries sustained, some are serious,” said one of the medical officials.

According to one of the soldiers who have survived the accident,  last week  the same vehicle  nearly crashed as it lost one of the tyres while moving.

He said most of the  vehicles at the barracks have  no lights and brakes.
