Observance of the Christian Passion
Catholic Church are continuing their observance of the Christian Passion today, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday.
Thousands of Catholics from St Peter and Paul Parish in conjunction with St Pius Parish in Blantyre started the long holy weekend of Easter with walking pilgrimage of the annual “Way of the Cross” Good Friday procession, the day Jesus Christ was crucified and nailed on the cross.
The day is part of Easter celebrations when Christians celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. Christians recall the day when Jesus of Nazareth was crucified in about 33 A.D. in Jerusalem.
Members of congregation carried the wooden across 15 Stations of the Cross. The walk began from St Pius and ended at St Peter and Paul parish in Chirombwe.
In his sermon, Fr George Kaliati said Good Friday is a “day of fast, penance and sacrifice” after a Lenton period.
Fr Kaliati said “Jesus gave his life to save the mankind from sin and misery.”
Also in attendance was St Peter and Paul Parish priest Fr Peter Phiri.
Catholic and Protestant churches will celebrate Easter, commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus, on Sunday.
