Flood victims in Mzuzu risk houses pulled down
Mzuzu City Council officials are warning flood victims to stop constructing houses in flood prone areas or risk their houses having been pulled down.
Acting executive chairman for Mzuzu City Council, Victor Masina said this in view of many houses that are mushrooming from the devastating flooding rubble.
“Let me warn them here, we will not sit back. We will demolish any houses from those places. No one is supposed to construct any house without our permission,” he said.
The most affected areas are Chibanja and Chiputula, swampy water logged areas where at least six people were killed just a few month ago after their houses fell on them and displaced close to 20,000.
El Nino weather phenomenon is blamed for the devastating floods that have also hit other parts of the northern region, especially Karonga and Nkhata Bay.
Masina said the council has not given permission to start construction of houses saying it is still risky and the council has to approve construction works to ensure they are durable.
