Chiumia tables Copyright bill to fight piracy
Sports and Culture minister Grace Chiume on Thursday presented the Copyright bill in parliament and among other seeks is aimed at fighting piracy.
The bill seeks to increase punishment for those involved in piracy, by increasing the fine from the current K250000 to a whopping K10 million.
Chiume said this is the only way to fight piracy which is making artists poorer than ever before whilst the pirates are becoming richer.
The bill if passed into law and enforced, stands to benefit arts creators in a number of areas such as the protection of their works as its exerts a maximum penalty K700 000 (about $1 014) to perpetrators of copyright-related infringements.
Some musicians, including veteran and renowned Vita Chirwa watched from the public gallery of the House as Chiume presented the bill.
Musicians and artists have been pushing for the bill to be presented in parliament for some years.
