APM pardons 243 Malawi prisoners: Part of Independence celebrations
Malawi President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM) has Pardoned 243 prisoners as part of Republic Celebrations which fall on 6th July.
According to a statement from Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security made available to Nyasa Times on Thursday, the prisoners who have been pardoned are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences, with good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences.
“Some prisoners have been considered for pardon because of their medical conditions. The Pardon of the 243 prisoners is a symbol of forgiveness during this Year’s Republic Celebrations,” reads the statement in part.
This year, the Malawi President had directed that the 52nd Independence celebrations be marked by National Service of Worship as main activity.
Mutharika led the worship service that took place on at Bingu International Conventional Centre in the capital Lilongwe.
