Opposition presses Malawi govt to increase salaries for civil servants

Opposition Peoples Party (PP) has told government to increase salaries for civil servants to meet the rising cost of life.

Jooma: Increase salaries of civil servants

Ralph Jooma, finance spokesperson for PP said that civil servants have been caught up in the ever escalating cost of life due to economic dwindling.

He therefore wondered why Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development  Goodall Gondwe did not indicate the rise in pay of the civil servants. Jooma also laughed off Gondwe’s prediction that the economy is bound for a rebound because of, among other issues, good rains.

He said good rains alone is not a factor for a rebound of the economy.

Jooma, a former minister of economic planning himself, said the government should ensure value addition for agriculture products if the country is to have a rebound economy.

Gondwe has in his past statements ruled out increasing salaries for civil servants. He asked those civil servants seeking salary increase to leave the civil service and join the private sector which pays well.

@ Chimanga, Resources will come from savings that will be made after cutting unnecessary expenses as well as sealing all loopholes that Chaponda was using to steal money from Govt

They can not even pass any this g they delay sessions in order to get more days to get allowances. They are paid in millions just for allowances while the civil workers has very little. Its in fair. This has lead to bad perfmanc of civil servants. Malawians are selfish creature who… Read more »
