Malawi athletics yet to pay world cross country

Athletics Association of Malawi is yet to pay allowances to a six-member delegation to World Cross Country six weeks after it was held in Kampala, Uganda.

Malawi was represented by Chancy Master, Caphus Kasten, Grevazio Mpani, Mercy Chirwa with Moses Mkondowe as coach.

Mkondowe said they participated at the competition without money as they were told that they would be paid after their arrival from the race.

“We were assured by the General Secretary Frank Chitembeya that we will be sorted after coming back but we are yet to get our dues,”he said.

“Two weeks ago the athletics president Godfrey Phiri called to assure me that we will be paid but we dont when that will be.”

He said the athletes had been pestering him to get their dues as he also doubled as leader of delegation.

“One of the athletes called me asking but I advised him to wait or call the General Secretary or President for an update,”he said.

Chitembeya confirmed that the association had not paid their allowances because they of financial problems.

“We are expecting to get funding from International Athletics Association Federation soon. Once that is done we will pay them.”

The athletes will be paid US$35 per day for 10 days with the coach to pocket US$50 a day for 10 days.

The athletes travelled by road 3000km to the race held on March 26.
