Neno magistrate under fire for corruption: One victim appeals case to High Court
The Neno district court is losing its grip as an institution supposed to deliver justice following myriad revelations that second magistrate Daniel Dzowela is getting palm-oiled to rule in favor of certain individuals.
Nyasa Times understands that Dzowela, who has been at the court for just three years now, has gone haywire to the extent that some concerned people had to report him to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) which is yet to act on the matter.
In a recent case, Neno district businessperson, Alick Maliana, has appealed to the high court to review his case in which one Mapepu who works for Partners in Health borrowed K250 000 from him but later failed to repay the loan.
After submitting that he could not be able to repay the loan, Mapepu agreed to surrender a phone, a mountain bike and two shaving machines in the presence of chief in the village and community police representatives.
Documents seen by Nyasa Times show that the property Mapepu surrendered totaled to K260 000.
But to Maliana’s belief, Mapepu went to court and sued the former on grounds that he had taken his property using force.
“I was surprised when the summon got to me. And, to my surprise again, the magistrate did not allow my witnesses to submit their accounts in court. I was ordered to pay K456 000 in compensation to the man who already owes me K250 000,” said Maliana.
According to Maliana, he feels being denied justice throughout the process and said that was why he was appealing.
“I was ordered to pay the fine on the spot as it was a criminal case yet it was a civil case. I decided to appeal because I have total conviction that the magistrate connived with the complainant,” said Maliana.
Others concerned who spoke on condition of anonymity decried the magistrate’s behavior of throwing work ethics to the dogs.
“The magistrate has never been fair when the issue involves a rich and poor person,” one of the concerned said.

Our country has gone to the dogs not many government officials have work ethics. Introduce a compulsory work ethics subject from primary to university to deter people from stealing from the state. Corruption is a hibby in our country
