Malawi youth urged to venture into entrepreneurship: Minister says time for white collar jobs is gone

Minister of Labour, Manpower Development, Youth and Sports, Francis Kasaila  said urged the youth in the country to venture into entrepreneurship and not just wait to secure white collar jobs.

Kasaila made the remarks on Friday in Zomba, when he opened the first ever trade fair organized by Center for Free Market Business Enterprise aimed at promoting youth business enterprise.

He observed that it is high time the youth started to walk their talk of being future leaders through getting entrepreneurship skills and start businesses that would create jobs for themselves and other fellow youths.

“The time for white collar jobs is gone. The youth should start creating jobs for themselves through venturing into business enterprises. You should get skills in entrepreneurship management to uphold government’s vision of establishing community colleges,” he said.

Kasaila also revealed that government through the African Development Bank and Youth-Net Finance Loan would soon roll out a job creation programme for youth entrepreneurs, where they would be trained in business skills and considered for loans to start business ventures.

The Minister also said it is only through the youth that the country could develop, adding that soon government would launch a community college in Zomba as part of encouraging the youth to be self-reliant.

Peter Yakobe, Executive Director for Center for Free Market Business Enterprise, one of an innovative youth, said his company believes a prosperous Malawi through youth entrepreneurship is possible.

Yakobe asked government to consider investing in young people to transform the country’s reeling economy in the coming 50 years in line with the African Union agenda 2063.

On his part, Zomba District Trade Officer, Noel Shema, observed that the trade fair had created an opportunity for both traders and buyers to interact and that the customers would have the chance to ask questions on products and services offered by various participating organizations.

Shema also hailed the idea of investing in the youth because they are future leaders and an active section of the population that can help to transform the economy in future.

The trade fair mainly dominated by youth entrepreneurs will run from Friday until Sunday.
