Another lightning kills two, seriously injures one in Karonga

Just few days after lightening killed two people in Salima and Neno districts, a man and a woman have died in separate incidents after lightening struck them to death over the weekend.

The incident occurred in Karonga district where the third person, identified as 31-year-old Wilson Mbewe from TA Kapichi in Thyolo district, is battling for life at Karonga District Hospital.

The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old Dorothy Mtawali from TA Kilupula in the district and Edward Nkhoma, 40, from Phalombe district.

Karonga Police Spokesperson Enock Livason said the lightening struck simultaneously in neighbouring villages.

In the first incident which took place in the area of Paramount Chief Kyungu, Nkhoma and Mbewe were both hit by the lightening as they returned from a piece work.

“The two men were walking home from a maize field where they were doing a piece work when the lighting hit them,” he said.

Livason said Nkhoma died instantly while Mbewe had some muscle spasms and became unconscious. He was rushed to the health facility where he is still receiving treatment.

The other lightening struck at Chimalawanthu village in the area of Chief Kilupula and killed Mtawali on the scene.

The police spokesperson said the incidents were the second fatal accidents to be recorded in the district since the onset of rains two months ago.

In rural Malawi, deaths resulting from lightening are generally linked to some supernatural powers due to envy among villagers and sometimes when one wants to boost his or her business.
