Twins of sugar scarcity, Illovo and Salima Sugar, says ‘no longer sugar scarcity from next week’

Key sugar producers in the country, Illovo and Salima Sugar  have come out in the open to say the prolonged unavailability of sugar in Malawi shop shelves ends next week.

The two sugar producing companies say the supply of sugar on the local market is likely to stabilize by the end of this week.

The chief executive officer for Illovo, Lekani Katandula said the company would not have resumed production at full capacity as its machines had just undergone some annual maintenance, remarks that have been shared by Wester Kosamu of Salima Sugar Company.

The two were reacting to concerns in some quarters of society that the commodity continues to be scarce despite the sugar manufacturers resuming production for over a week now.

However, Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) executive director Sylvester Namiwa has faulted the two sugar manufacturers for failing to satisfy the local demand.

The commodity has been scarce in the country since the end of last year, a development that has resulted in an escalation of prices for the commodity, which is selling above K3,700 per one kilogram packet.
