DPP terror campaign displease Malawi Catholic Church
Chairman for the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa has expressed worry over reported cases of political skirmishes rocking the country especially when some constituencies and wards are scheduled to hold by elections.
He said it is a pity to hear and read in the papers of political violence allegedly perpetrated by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and at the same time bad actions by party followers in the country.
“This is not Malawi. Malawians are well known as peace loving people hence are supposed really to show good example. I condemn all bad and violent activities therefore,” said Archbishop Msusa of Blantyre Archdiocese.
He challenged political party leaders in the country to come out and denounce all violent activities happening by their party followers.
“Malawi will not develop if we are disorganized and divided into party leadership,regional leadership and into tribal leadership. This is not Malawi. Let us get united,” he said.
Archbishop Msusa said elected leaders are for all Malawians, therefore they should strive to preach peace and at the same time encourage people to leave in harmony and that should first be demonstrated by them.
Recent media reports indicate that there has been running battles by party supporters who were clad in party attires and eventually marred Gonapamuhanya,a Tumbuka ceremony at Bolero in Rumphi.
Other reports indicate that the Lower Shire district of Nsanje,particularly in NsanjeLalanje Constituency where a By-election will be held, seems to have fast turned into a political battlefield for the DPP and the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Analysts says as a party currently in government, DPP needs to come out strongly and deal with the deplorable violence, saying that cannot be achieved by simply disassociating itself from the perpetrators of the violence, but more so by using its proximity to the State machinery to get to the bottom of the Rumphi and Nsanje incidents so that the culprits are properly identified and dealt with as provided by law.
With the tripartite elections only one 19 months away, it is also important that a powerful message is sent out by the relevant law enforcing agents that violence will not be tolerated; otherwise, any frustration emanating from failure to deal with the hooligans will lead to more tragic clashes.
Malawi is touted all over the world as a peaceful country and its democracy has been maturing steadily. It will be a huge dent on progress if hoodlums who cannot embrace this march into the future are allowed to derail the rest of the country.

Mr jigsaw, is it not a famous saying which goes ” atsogoleri amawasankha ndi Mulungu?”” Where was Chakwera the pastor, man of God, when the Almighty pointed the finger on APM. Didn’t the DPP receive all sorts of insults and decampaign messages from the powers that be that DPP is a fallen party and let it fall for good?
Archbishop Msusa only condemned violence; he did not mention DPP. But it is common knowledge and fact the terror is by DPP and Minister Chiumia apologised for it, that’s truthful reporting.
Fotsek! Who cares what the catholic says? The catholic church is one of the the churches that made me strongly doubt the existence and truthful of chrisitanity and religion. Thanks to them am now ant religion.
One of the DPP bosses attends prayers with full state publicity – His name is Saulos Chilima – he needs to understand what the church is saying. We are yet to see his real direction as a leader – second in command for that matter.
Maawians have themselves to blame for voting a terrorist blue party back to power. God did his part to remove them from power but we did not listen and see. Its time for the electorate to enjoy the bitter fruit of wrong choice.
