Times’ Mandy Pondani elected new Nyika Media club chairperson

Mzuzu- based Nyika Media Club in the Northern part of Malawi has a new chairperson and she is Mandy Pondani.

Pondani(R) and Banda won as chair and vice

Pondani  the  Bureau chief for  Times media Group in the region, defeated her male-counterpart Alex Banda of Zodiak Broadcasting station by 25-10 votes.

The elections took place at Mphatso Motel in Mzuzu city on Saturday.

It followed the two-year-term office expiry of the previous committee headed by Wanagwa Tembo who this time did not contest.

Police officers Martin Bwanali and Cecelia Mfune who both are spokespersons for Mzuzu police station, commissioned the election and they described the polls as free and fair.

Speaking as Guest of honour at the Annual elective council meeting, the deputy Executive Director for the Church and Society in the Church and Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP)  of the Synod of Livingstonia, Jacob Nkhambule, congratulated Pondani together with her new committee for the victory.

However, he challenged the members to embark on a fundraising- drive if they are to effectively operate the activities of the media grouping.

Nkhambule  called for responsible and professional  journalism in the way members  conduct their duties by ensuring that there is balance and peace in their stories if the 2019 polls are to be free from violence.

Said Nkhambule: “While I appreciate the dilemma of temptations  you are subjected to due to  the economic hard times,  and political pressures, I expect you  journalists  to resist  if you are to achieve the obligation of protecting Malawians from social injustice and what have you.”

On her part, Pondani   thanked the members for entrusting her with the post saying she will strive to develop the journalistic values and promote community radio broadcasting for the social economic development of the rural areas which for long have lagged behind on development.

Vice chairperson is Andrew Mkonda Banda who defeated Raymond Midaya by 27-8 votes. Themba Mwale is General Secretary who went unopposed. Rose Mahorya also went unchallenged as vice general Secretary while Juliet Chirwa, Frank Kauteka Tembo were elected treasure general and projects officer.
