Minister Mussa says Malawi youth unemployment ‘worrying’

Government has come in the open to acknowledge the high unemployment rate among the youth in the country.

Mussa: High levels of unemployment are especially worrying for young people

The sentiments were made by the minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Henry Mussa during a conference for the Malawi Growth Accelerator Market Test project at the UNDP offices in Lilongwe on Thursday.

Mussa said it is “worrisome” situation to note that 60 percent of the youth are unemployed despite attaining various academic qualifications.

He however, called out to the youth in the country to start thinking from outside the box by being innovative rather than waiting to be employed.

“In Malawi we have so many resources that if the youth are innovative they can stop from being job seekers to job creators,” said the Minister.

Mussa commended the UNDP and the Norwegian Embassy   for the growth accelerator project which will see innovative youth getting a business startup of 10 to 40 million dollars per individual.

According Maria Jose Torres, the UNDP Resident  Representative, about 12 people of age limit of 35 will benefit from the startup.

In her statement, Torres stressed that the initiative will help to engine the economy making Malawi to become independent from donor aid

  1. This Mussa guy is stupid. Thinking outside the box…. innovative…my foot. You need to create the environment for the youth tp think outside the box. You ned to give examples. Now, I think its time for these guys to go. They have been in power for long and they are not going to help Malawi. Muzipita basi. Chilima emweyo tione zina. Ena adyepo.

  2. Don’t hoodwink us! Iwe wemwe Musa ukakhala ndi president suungamuuuze izi ayi………..!! Pano mwaononga ononga ndiye kumati…………………………………………………………………………….. shut up!!

  3. Mr Mussa, let me give you free advice and prediction. Now that you were part of creating these delinquent unemployable youths, you’ll witness some type of revolt as they (youths) wake up in realisation that they have all along been used by politicians for their own benefits. You’ll never ever get to enjoy what all of you politicians have plundered from Malawi. They will come for you and your innocent families sooner rather than later. Write down this prediction in your White book and open it in 12 months time…..it will be spot on!!

  4. Mr Mussa don’t make your cheap campaign on poor youth when did you realise that there is high unemployment rate among the youth? You have been a minister for a long long time are you telling me you don’t know the challenges that youth of Malawi are facing? Ooh how can you ? Since most of your children of you minister you are sending them abroad for comfortable life while sons of common Malawians are struggling in the streets and villages. I hate when politics plays a such bigger roles than common senses I am not a fan of Joyce Banda nor her party but she introduced this good program of exporting labour to other countries like middle east, Asia, Europe Canada etc. That was one way of reducing unemployment among the youth. The Phillipines have succeeded they have managed to sent 10 million
people abroad and the country is doing well beacause of these people why cant you emulate the same example but because it was started by Joyce Banda then its a stupid policy. When are we Malawi going to learn to work together despite our political affiliations and develop our Nation? Let us not let Politics tribe Religion etc devide us our friends are doing better because they are united. They love their country first. This time around let us put people into power who love their Nation rather than their tribe, party etc Malawi is in a pathetic state than it was 2 decades ago by now we should have been talking about electronic railway locomotives but alas! I dont think even the diesil one are in operation.
The country is a such a failed state because lack of good leadership
We are putting greedy people who have no clue on how to take our Nation forward at all but what they know is to plunder an already fragile economy ( mkukama yowonda kale) look Bingu came in but within a short period of time he managed to turn around the economic situation of our country. I wish we could have another good leader like Bingu. Probably Malawi can sing a new song.

    1. You have hit the nail on it’s head 123. It’s high time that the youths rise to the occasion and do the right thing. The current crop of politicians have failed not only the youths but the whole country and Africa. We need to send them to old age homes to be consulted when necessary for their fountain of knowledge.

  5. What are you doing about it you beasts? You give the K50,000s as Kaliati says and get them painted to cause havoc at parliament. Very stupid government. You are building stadiums instead of schools and hospitals. By increasing schools it means more jobs as teachers. All you know is stealing and building houses in areas 43 etc. The youth are the future of this country. You force them into prostitution You force them to become ruthless cadets. OMG.

  6. YOUTHS UNEMPLOYMENT WORRYING !!

    THE GVT HAS EXTRA BILLIONS
(DOESN’T KNOW WHAT;HOW TO USE THEM ) AND YET WE HAVE
    OUR OWN YOUTHS /LESS PRIVILEGED

GOD WILL PUNISH US HERE ON
    EARTH AND WHERE WE’RE GOING
    (GRAVE )HELL !!

    CHANGE !!

  8. So, UNDP is providing 40 thousand dollars to 12 youths and claims this “project” will help engine the economy and make it independent of donor aid? This is a joke! This is not even a project worth the time of a whole Minister of Trade to attend ($480 thousand)! Not even a million dollars? This is cheap publicity by UNDP. You can do better! The concept is good, but you could have teamed up with development finance institutions like World Bank and African Development Bank to scale up the project to a minimum of $50 million in order to have an impact!
    Malawi is such a laughingstock!
And do we really need such projects from donors when Goodall Gondwe tells us he has an extra K4 billion in the budget, which he doesn’t know what to do with and ends up sharing it among the idiots we call MPs? Can’t Malawi use such money to finance the youths who graduate from technical school, Natural Resiurces College, Hotel training school etc to open up businesses such as garages, graphic design studios, building contractors, tour operations, restaurants and wellness centres? Can’t Malawi mobilise it’s own internal resources for such initiatives instead of getting crumbs from UNDP. The money UNDP is giving us is not even enough to pay the salaries and benefits of its own Resident Representative for 2 years. Now I understand why Trump wants to reduce funding to these UN agencies. I mean, you cannot have such petty projects and claim they’ll engineer an economy. Leave such petty stuff to NGOs and Community based organisations
