President’s niece Duwa Mutharika posted to Malawi consulate in South Africa
President Peter Mutharika has appointed his niece, Duwa Mutharika as first secretary in the Malawi consulate in Johansburg, South Africa.
An appointment letter signed by principal secretary in the ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Isaac Munlo says Duwa will be responsible for promotion of tourism at the consulate.
Duwa is the daughter of former president late Bingu wa Mutharika, who was the incumbent president’s elder brother.
Munlo says in the letter that the Malawi High Commissioner to South Africa will communicate with her as regards to when she can start her job.
President Peter Mutharika was groomed by Duwa’s father, Bingu to become the country’s president.
The appointment comes at a time when there are concerns that Malawi missions abroad is stuffed with party proteges and close relatives of top ruling DPP and government officials.

I personally don’t see any problem with the appointment. The fact that her uncle is a president doesn’t mean she cannot qualify for the said position. come on people lets focus on real matters not this cheap one. So you are telling me all children and relatives of politicians are not eligible for government positions for fear that people may think its biased move?…No No No No lets open our minds clearly and focus on the real things. If you are not working hard just know your generation will suffer forever, its on record that Duwa’s father worked hard for… Read more »
Bingu Mutharika was an educated man, but all his children are dull and never went to school, such that none of them does even have an A level qualification. So why offer Duwa a challenging position like this that requires someone with marketing qualifications and experience? Where did Duwa work before to deserve this position of marketing Malawi? After all, she is no longer Malawian after she got married to a Zimbabwean man, I am sure she changed her passport and why should the Malawi Government offer her a job? Are Malawian jobs for foreigners? You are doing excatly the… Read more »
Do not deliberately try to misguide yourselves or undermine the real issue here, which is DPP NEPOTISM / LHOMWELISATION of public appointments.
Duwa if she is well-qualified as all others she should have applied, SHORTLISTED then go for interviews then competitively selected for the post fairly.
That’s what is normal anywhere else!
It’s an open secret that government sectors and state owned enterprises are infested with MULHAKHOS all over. If one wonders why underperformance by such appointed mediocres and end result Malawi being the poorest nation on earth, (IMF indicator), then SHAME on us.
SHAME on THIEVES!!!
Whether she has the requisite qualifications for that appointment is the first question to be answered. The second one relates to where has she come from considering that there are several other qualified personal in the ministry of foreign affairs. People should not just be plucked from the air and be given jobs like these without following protocol in the civil service. If she is qualified and has been in the system, then I have no problem notwithstanding her relationship with the sitting president. Otherwise this is exactly how you frustrate and demotivate well deserving civil servants. South Africa is… Read more »
Someone gave an example of D.Trump for the appointment of his daughter and son in law in government position. What should bear in mind is that,USA and Malawi are two different entities.Whatever the case,Malawians might take this as nepotism and true to the meaning, yes this is nepotism of the highest level but, however,if this unwelcome scenario could have happened under a Tumbuka leadership, the people from the South and Central Malawi could have shouted equine. In fact, this is a misguided leadership which has brought down Malawi’s reputation.GO AHEAD MATHANYULA,YOUR TIME IS VERY CLOSE!!!!!!!!

Nothing wrong with posting your close allies (trusted lieutenants) to man diplomatic posts; anyone in political leadership would do the same. Peter mutharika ayamba kuthawa kale in case DPP loses the elections.

Even Donald Trump appointed his own daughter and son-in-law into political positions. Thats just how life works. Nanunso abale anu when they are in power azakupatsani udindo.
