Striker Chiukepo Msowoya risks getting a lengthy ban following his physical attack  on Mzuzu based referee Misheck Juwa  during the violence that occurred on Sunday at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe during the Airtel Top 8 final between Nyasa Big Bullets and Blue Eagles.

Msowoya pounced on the referee before other players and supporters joined the fray. As police and game Stewarts fought against the aggressive Bullets’ followers, a rain of missiles poured onto the pitch from the stands occupied by Bullets fans.

The ulgy scene of violence reare dits ugly head again when  Stuart Mbunge netted the winner for the Malawi Police Service (MPS)-sponsored side from a spot-kick awarded after Bullets’ Yamikani Fodya fouled Gilbert Chirwa in the box. The decision infuriated some Bullets fans and players who were seen physically assaulted referee Juwa while others threw objects on the pitch.

In a video, which is circulating on social media,  it is an objective evidence where Msowoya is seen violently raging at the the refree who was rescued by the police
Football Association of Malawi Competitions Committee Chairperson, Jabbar Alide  said they cannot  tolerate uncouth behaviour in a game of football   and said what  he witnessed  on Sunday was  uncalled
for.

“We are going to take stern measures to anybody   involved as well as the officials that I saw inciting. We’re waiting for the referee and match commissioner’s reports so that we act accordingly and deal with these bad elements of the game which tarnish the image of football.”

He said the issue will have to go through the disciplinary committee.

There is already a precedence  when Moyale Barracks goalkeeper Mc Donald Harawa was banned for  six months by the Super League of Malawi for punching referee Sam Mangasanja and his assistant Kelvin Ngolanga.

Three Red Lions players namely  Loti Chawinga, Dickson Mbetewa Jnr were also banned for a year by Sulom for manhandling referee Boniface Chapinga during their League game against then Sure Stream FC.

  3. Is there anybody who can critically analyze the video clip with an open mind from 10-43 seconds please??
    What I’m seeing in this section of the video clip, especially from 10-16 seconds, is actually Chiukepo Msowoya coming to rescue the Referee from the incoming group of other bullets players and fans before hell broke loose.

    From 10-12 seconds:
    First is Chimango Kayira, who is the first in stopping fellow bullets players from manhandling the Referee.

    From 12-30 seconds:
    Chiukepo grabs the Referee to further shield him from the angry players and fans. On the 13th second, Police and Stewards arrive on the scene with a supposed task of liberating the Referee from the hands of the furious players and fans. A man in a Navy Blue or Black Golf Shirt and Khaki trouser is clearly seen throwing a punch on the helpless Referee. Another man dressed in a red T-Shirt and a red cap is also seen kicking the Referee who is still being held by Chiukepo Msowoya.Another man in a red-white stripped Golf shirt is again seen beating the Referee as well as the stewards(17-21 seconds).

    From 31-43 seconds:
    The Police are then seen wrestling against Chiukepo Msowoya who is till holding on to the Referee and he angrily reacts to the moves of the armed Policemen who seem to be manhandling him. On the 41 second mark, a Police officer in uniform and putting on a reflective neon-green bib is clearly seen hitting Chiukepo Msowoya with his arm on the shoulder and head.Seeing this, Chiukepo Msowoya looks very surprised at what the Police are doing on him as one of them whisk him away.

    MY CONCLUSION
    If the above video clip is real and only what happened on that day, then it is not enough to conclude that Chiukepo Msowoya beat up the Referee in question. Maybe it happened and was never captured on video or the clip has been edited to conceal the actual incident showing Chiukepo beating the Referee but as far as the tendered video clip is concerned, Chiukepo did NOT beat the Referee.

    2. B.I.G, thanks for the narration of what you observe from the video clip. Some of us did not see it happening nor have we seen the clip. However, the interpretation of what was going on, solely depends on the person watching the video clip. Players, I believe have their code of conduct in football. You might have intention of being a good Samaritan as a player but due to certain rules in football it might bring trouble when it comes to getting closer to the referee.

    4. Your analysis is wrong. Your interpretation is based on the video clip. So you are free to interpret as you lile. Those os us who were at Bingu Nattional Stadium and watched the the game saw Msowoya punching the referee. It is true technology is good but you can also abuse it by telling people lies about the photo or video clip. You can also photoshop it by bringing in other people.
      So your conclusion is wrong. You are a liar and a fool. Those of us who were at BNS saw what happened. If you a BB fan, sorry this undisciplined player called Msowoya will be disciplined. Period!

      1. Thanks for your contrary observation, Sir. I guess you heard what the Referee said in his report that Chiukepo Msowoya DID NOT punch him as you said. You may have been present at BNS but missed or wrongly made conclusions in as far as the incident is concerned. Don’t worry though as it happens to everyone.

    1. Video technology has emerged as a powerful medium through which first hand information about an event can be gathered and in a given situation may prove to be a crucial piece of evidence. At the same time, it could be susceptible to tampering and alterations by transposition which may be difficult to detect. Such evidence may be received with caution. Thus they can be manipulated in order to skew the reality. However, for it to be of value, it must either support or undermine the truth of any point at issue in the proceedings. The questions are: how was the video recorded? Who recorded the scene? How is the video recorder maintained? These are posed because of the word “admissibility”. From the picture, it seems Chiukepo was protecting the referee from any assault being inflicted by fellow players. But someone should post a video in which Chiukepo is repeatedly seen punching the referee. Note … neither a fan of bullets nor Chiukepo …

      2. Join the discussion.I agree with you 100 percent..From the evidence of this clip Chiukepo did not beat the referee in fact he was protecting the referee and I am certain the referee will attest to this in his match report.

        1. You are just showing your foolishness about technology and how challenged you are in thinking. The referee will write a report about what happened. Moreover, people saw what happened. Uchindele pera. So what defence do you have?

    1. The fault of one individual cannot be apportioned to everybody in a specific society or a specific ethnic grouping. Let us not bring in one’s ethnicity is such matters. No one is fallible.

  8. The comments are prejudicing the outcome of the disciplinary process. What is the referee was in the wrong, should Chiukepo be punished? The offence could be the awarding of the wrong penalty or the beating of the referee. Avoid delivering judgement before hearing!!!!!

  13. I think the writer of this article is very biased. You have not stated what triggered the violence and yet you are acting as a Jury and a Judge. The gist remains it was not a penalty. Fodya played the ball first before Gilbert Chirwa tungled with Fodya. Fodya played the ball and not the man. Also the referee was very far from the scene of the incident -more than ten metres and why he could not seek assistance of opinion from his assistant begs the question -why give the penalty when you are not sure? It was a very controversial decision and that triggered the violence.The ref should be also punished for contributing to the violence because rules clearly state that the referee should not influence the outcome a match and here he did.He deserves punishment for this.

    1. Does a refs mistake give an okay to start fights? Costly mistakes are being made at the world cup even with the help of video assistant referees but have we seen losing supporters or players causing havoc? A mistake that a ref makes influences a game but that does not mean the affected supporters or players have the duty to judge the ref on spot, no. Get civilised

  14. FAM must punish severely every one seen inciting and perpetrating violence. In football you win or lose. Nothing new. Actually, others should be banned for not less than a season. For the player involved, he is not worth to play football in Malawi.

    1. All players who incited violence a ban for a year and a half, the club to pay damages for 10 million Kwacha. The so called civil society institutions to orient all clubs that football is an exciting sport but not a fight. That is the only way to expose foolishness of this club that claims to know football.

  16. That is why football is not developing in this country, In Europe team lose due to poor decisions by the match officials but you can not see them beating them. Even at this current world cup poor decisions are made but there is no beatings, pitch inversions etc

I thought the same police who sponsors Blue Eagles said can not use social media evidence to arrest Osman (owner of Ntopwa Super Queens) for harassing MCP youthful member in Limbe?   21. This is embarrassing. How can a player of his age and experience behave in such a manner. If a player can do that, what will the supporters do? Give him a life ban so that it can be a lesson to others. Malawi has lacked development in soccer because of such hooligans who let the sponsors shun the sport.
